The Return of RetroFizz
Sep 14 | 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Easy Listening + Mellow 60s Pop
Before Yacht Rock there was Elevator Pop — the softer side of the 60s hit-parade and the final bow of mid-century American popular song. RetroFizz returns to Crooners to celebrate the music that rolled on the radio without rocking, with an evening of Mancini and Bacharach, Bossa Nova, movie themes, British invasion ballads, Brill Building tune-smithery and some surprise musical mash-ups.
RetroFizz takes a deep dive into the genius (and kitsch) of the under-appreciated music that dared to be beautiful. The instrumental core of the band is three local jazz scene veterans (Morris Engel, drums/vocals; Jim Kennedy, keyboards/vocals; and Joe Weismann, bass/vocals), whose musical careers have covered everything from alt rock to rockabilly, a cappella, classic country, swing, Bluegrass and an all-ukulele cover band. They are joined by vocalist Ariel Donahue, a multidisciplinary artist whose theater background makes her a perfect fit for the material.
